Application to Become an Oocyte Donor
Introduction.
All oocyte donors are subjected to an extensive and detailed screening to ensure their suitability as donors. Their screening includes an extensive questionnaire that includes questions about their personal, social, psychological, family, and medical history. A follow-up interview and subsequent complete physical examination is also performed. They must be dependable, healthy women, between 18-30 years of age, who have passed medical, infectious disease, genetic and psychological evaluations and drug screens. We have an active list of egg donors of diverse ethnic groups who have been selected after they have met our medical and genetic screening standards. We are periodically screening and adding egg donors to our program list. Though the donation is anonymous, we will reveal many things about the donor except her identity. This is important, because it will enable the recipient to make an informed choice about the appropriateness of the proposed egg donor. In addition, once the recipient gets pregnant, it will serve as a record about the genetic background of the child(ren).
Characteristics of an ideal oocyte donor
You may be an egg donor if...
1. You have passed successfully all required physical, medical and genetic testing.
2. You are a reliable, dependable person interested in helping women overcome their infertility.
3. You are between 18-32 years of age.
4. You are willing to follow our instructions closely.
Potential risks to the donor.
The donor will experience the discomfort of several injections during the cycle as well as frequent visits to the office. She will have to be partially sedated during the oocyte harvest. In addition, the hormones given to her will cause abdominal discomfort characterized as "fullness" of her abdomen. In very few cases, the donor will experience hyper-stimulation syndrome. Also, if they do not abstain from sexual activity for a few days after the egg retrieval, there may be the probability of pregnancy. In a limited number of cases, the menstrual periods may be disrupted. In addition, during the retrieval procedure there is a remote, but real possibility, of abdominal bleeding which may require hospitalization. During our almost 10 years experience we have had very few cases where the donor was hospitalized.
The Donor Oocyte Screening process.
The selection process for oocyte donors is divided into two stages. First we need information about your age, weight and height. Also, we need to know if you have medical insurance. No charges will be made to you or your insurance company but insurance is necessary should you ever require hospitalization. You may be able to apply for admission to our ADOP on line. (application)
The last part of the screening process requires your presence in our office and deals with a medical exam, ovarian reserve test, drug screening and infectious disease testing. At this time you will be required to submit transcripts of the last school you attended (high school or college), medical records, and birth certificates, and pictures of your children if any.
The Ovarian Stimulation Cycle and Oocyte Harvest.
Once you are accepted in the program, you are assigned to our list of active donors and when chosen ready to go for a retrieval cycle. A cycle consists of giving you small doses of gonadotropins to stimulate your ovaries to produce several follicles. Your ovaries are monitored with vaginal ultrasound and blood tests 4-5 times to determine the number and rate of follicular growth prior to retrieval. Once your follicles are ready, you are given an injection to trigger ovulation. However, the oocytes are harvested prior to ovulation in our office using and ultrasound guided needle inserted through the vagina. The oocyte harvest is a relatively painless procedure which involves partial sedation and it does not take longer that 2 hours from the time you walk in until the time you are ready to go home.
Honorarium.
We understand that this commitment requires time and represents an inconvenience and risk for you. Therefore, the oocyte donors are compensated $5000.00 for each procedure that ends with an egg retrieval. Please note that we reserve our right to change our fee schedule at any time but you will receive the amount agreed to at the time of cycle instructions..
